Recommendation that
trigonometrical
32
maps at Hong Kong is of an order of accuracy which
barely justifies the production of a map on the
scale of 1/20,000, and that the production of maps
on a larger scale cannot, at present, be
contemplated.
The Survey Service in Hong Kong is not
a separate department but is a branch of the
P.W.D. It appears from the reports of the
Colonial Survey Committee that the department is
so much occupied with settlement surveys that it
has been quite unable to spare the personnel to put its trigonometrical framework on a satisfactory
basis. This is confirmed by the fact that when
the Colonial Survey Section was in HongKong every
assistance was given by the Department with the
exception that it was not found possible to
cooperate in the field work, and it was not possible to amplify the information already given
about the trigonometrical framework.
As the original records of the surveys
framework should be are not available it appears to be very advisable re-observed.
that the trigonometrical framework should be
re-observed ab initio both with a view to making
full use of the figures now available, and with a
view to coordinating the land settlement surveys
as the country becomes fully occupied.
The whole Colony is now covered by a
framework of points on the ground, the gaps in
the P.W.D. system having been filled by the points observed by the Colonial Survey Section. No reconnaissance for the new triangulation would
therefore be necessary, it being only necessary
for the old stations to be reoccupied.
